TRANSPARENT DISPLAY APPARATUS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18528901 titled 'TRANSPARENT DISPLAY APPARATUS

The patent application describes a transparent display system that can adjust its transparency based on the distance between the user and the screen.

  • The display includes two substrates, a display layer with pixels that can switch between transparent and display states, a controller, and a sensor device (camera) for detecting user distance and position.
  • The controller changes the transparency in specific regions based on the user's distance from the screen, creating a personalized viewing experience.
  • This technology allows for a more immersive and interactive display, enhancing user engagement and comfort.

Potential Applications:

  • Augmented reality devices
  • Interactive digital signage
  • Smart mirrors
  • Heads-up displays in vehicles

Problems Solved:

  • Improving user experience with transparent displays
  • Enhancing visibility and readability in varying lighting conditions

Benefits:

  • Personalized viewing experience
  • Increased user engagement
  • Improved visibility and readability

Commercial Applications:

  • Retail displays
  • Automotive displays
  • Entertainment venues

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the sensor device detect the distance between the user and the screen?

  - The sensor device, such as a camera, uses depth-sensing technology to measure the distance accurately.

2. Can the transparency level be manually adjusted by the user?

  - The transparency level is controlled automatically by the system based on the user's distance.

Original Abstract Submitted

A transparent display includes: a first substrate having a first surface; a second substrate having a second surface; a display layer having pixels that can transition between a transparent state that transmits background light and a display state that displays an image; a display region (screen); a controller; and a sensor device (camera) for detecting a distance between a user on a first surface side and the display region, and a position in the display region. The controller controls a degree of transparency so as to be changed in a partial region corresponding to the position according to the distance from the user to the screen.
