ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER SYSTEM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18520234 titled 'ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER SYSTEM

Simplified Explanation

The active grille shutter system described in the patent application includes a frame and vanes that can be rotated to define a blocking or unblocking configuration. The frame includes back supports to prevent deflection of the vanes in the direction of ram air, with bearing rods and cavities to facilitate movement of the vanes.

  • The frame of the active grille shutter system includes back supports to prevent deflection of the vanes.
  • Rotatable connection between the frame and vanes allows for angular movement to block or unblock airflow.
  • Bearing rods and cavities on the back supports facilitate movement of the vanes.
  • The bearing cavities encapsulate the periphery of the bearing rods to ensure smooth operation.
  • Features such as insertion assisting, locking, and retention mechanisms are incorporated for ease of assembly and operation.

Potential Applications

The active grille shutter system can be used in automotive vehicles to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency by controlling airflow through the grille.

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of inefficient aerodynamics in vehicles by providing a system that can actively control airflow through the grille.

Original Abstract Submitted

An active grille shutter system () includes a frame () and vanes () disposed within the frame (). Rotatable connection between the frame () and the vanes () permit angular movement the vanes () about longitudinal axis “X” thereof to define a blocking and an unblocking configuration thereof. The frame () includes at least one back support () disposed substantially orthogonal to the vanes () to prevent deflection of the vanes () in the direction of ram air. The back support () extends towards the vanes () and includes a plurality of bearing rods () received in bearing cavities () formed on corresponding vanes (). Each of the bearing cavity () encapsulates at least a portion of the periphery of corresponding bearing rod (). At least one of the bearing rod () and the corresponding bearing cavity () configured with at least one of insertion assisting, locking and retention features.
