SECONDARY BATTERY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18487804 titled 'SECONDARY BATTERY

The abstract of this patent application describes a secondary battery with an electrode assembly wound in a cylindrical case, including uncoated portions on the electrode plates and a cutting depth range before winding to prevent overlapping and damage during assembly.

  • The secondary battery features an electrode assembly with uncoated portions on the electrode plates, a separator, and a wound cylindrical case.
  • The cutting depth range before winding of the uncoated portions minimizes overlapping and damage during assembly.
  • Changing the cutting width of the non-coated portion for forming a substrate tab towards the winding end helps prevent overlapping of substrates.
  • The innovation aims to prevent or reduce damage to the substrate during pre-folding or compaction, improving the overall battery assembly process.
  • By optimizing the cutting depth and width, the patent application seeks to enhance the efficiency and reliability of secondary battery production processes.

Potential Applications: - This technology can be applied in the manufacturing of various types of secondary batteries, including lithium-ion batteries. - It can also be utilized in the production of rechargeable batteries for electronic devices, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems.

Problems Solved: - Minimizes overlapping of substrates during winding of the electrode assembly. - Prevents or reduces damage to the substrate during pre-folding or compaction processes.

Benefits: - Improved efficiency in secondary battery production. - Enhanced reliability of battery assembly processes. - Reduced risk of damage to battery components.

Commercial Applications: Secondary Battery Production Optimization: Enhancing the efficiency and reliability of secondary battery production processes through improved electrode assembly design and cutting techniques.

Questions about Secondary Battery Production Optimization: 1. How does the cutting depth range before winding of uncoated portions help prevent overlapping during assembly? The cutting depth range ensures that the uncoated portions are within a specific range to minimize overlapping of substrates during winding, improving the overall battery assembly process.

2. What are the potential applications of this technology beyond secondary battery production? This technology can also be applied in the manufacturing of rechargeable batteries for electronic devices, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of battery production processes.

Original Abstract Submitted

A secondary battery includes an electrode assembly which is wound and includes a first electrode plate including a first uncoated portion, a second electrode plate including a second uncoated portion, and a separator between the first electrode plate and the second electrode plate, a case having a cylindrical shape and accommodating the electrode assembly, and a cap assembly sealing the case, and a cutting depth before winding of each of the first uncoated portion and the second uncoated portion is in a range of 100% to 150% as compared with a forming position. When a non-coated portion for forming a substrate tab is cut, a cutting width is changed to increase toward a winding end, thereby minimizing or reducing an overlapping amount between substrates during winding, and damage to the substrate during pre-folding or compaction of the substrate may be prevented or substantially prevented.
