WATER ELECTROLYSIS SYSTEM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18463918 titled 'WATER ELECTROLYSIS SYSTEM

Simplified Explanation

The water electrolysis system described in the patent application includes a water electrolysis cell, a water supply device, a water supply channel, a gas-liquid separator, a water discharge channel, and a recombiner with a recombination catalyst that reacts hydrogen and oxygen.

  • Water electrolysis cell: where the electrolysis process takes place.
  • Water supply device: supplies water to the oxygen electrode of the cell.
  • Water supply channel: connects the cell and the water supply device for water flow.
  • Gas-liquid separator: separates water and gaseous components discharged from the oxygen electrode.
  • Water discharge channel: connects the cell and the separator for water and gas flow.
  • Recombiner: located between the cell and the separator, includes a catalyst to react hydrogen and oxygen.

Potential Applications: - Renewable energy production - Hydrogen fuel generation - Water treatment processes

Problems Solved: - Efficient separation of gaseous components from water - Safe recombination of hydrogen and oxygen gases

Benefits: - Increased efficiency in water electrolysis - Enhanced safety measures in gas handling

Potential Commercial Applications: - Renewable energy industry - Hydrogen fuel cell technology - Water treatment facilities

Possible Prior Art: - Prior art related to water electrolysis systems with gas-liquid separators and recombiners for hydrogen and oxygen gases.

Unanswered Questions: 1. How does the recombiner ensure complete recombination of hydrogen and oxygen gases? 2. What specific type of recombination catalyst is used in the recombiner?

Original Abstract Submitted

A water electrolysis system including: a water electrolysis cell; a water supply device that supplies water to an oxygen electrode of the water electrolysis cell; a water supply channel that connects the water electrolysis cell and the water supply device and through which the water supplied from the water supply device to the oxygen electrode flows; a gas-liquid separator that separates the water and a gaseous component discharged from the oxygen electrode; a water discharge channel that connects the water electrolysis cell and the gas-liquid separator and through which the water and a gaseous component discharged from the oxygen electrode flow; and a recombiner disposed between the water electrolysis cell and the gas-liquid separator in the water discharge channel. The recombiner includes a recombination catalyst that reacts hydrogen and oxygen, and the water electrolysis cell and the recombiner are electrically insulated from each other.
