IMAGE SENSOR - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18365522 titled 'IMAGE SENSOR

The patent application describes an image sensor with a chip structure containing both normal pixels and auto-focus pixels, as well as a grid structure and color filter regions defined by the grid structure over the chip structure. The color filter regions consist of normal filter regions corresponding to the normal pixels, and auto-focus filter regions. The chip structure has a first region at a first distance and a second region at a greater distance, with auto-focus filter regions on each region.

  • The image sensor includes normal pixels and auto-focus pixels.
  • A grid structure and color filter regions are defined over the chip structure.
  • The color filter regions consist of normal filter regions and auto-focus filter regions.
  • The chip structure has different regions at varying distances.
  • Auto-focus filter regions are present on each region.
  • The grid structure has different widths for portions adjacent to the auto-focus filter regions.

Potential Applications: - Digital cameras - Smartphones - Surveillance systems

Questions about Image Sensors: Question 1: How does the grid structure impact the performance of the image sensor? Answer: The grid structure helps define the color filter regions and ensures proper filtering of light for each pixel, enhancing image quality and color accuracy.

Question 2: What are the potential challenges in integrating auto-focus pixels with normal pixels in an image sensor? Answer: One challenge could be ensuring that the auto-focus pixels do not interfere with the normal pixels' functionality, while still providing accurate and fast auto-focus capabilities.

Original Abstract Submitted

An image sensor includes: a chip structure including normal pixels and auto focus pixels; a grid structure disposed on the chip structure; and color filter regions defined by the grid structure over the chip structure. The color filter regions include normal filter regions and auto focus filter regions. The normal filter regions correspond to the normal pixels. The chip structure includes a first region at a first distance, and a second region a second distance greater than the first distance. The auto focus filter regions include a first auto focus filter region on the first region and a second auto focus filter region on the second region. A first width of a first grid portion disposed adjacent the first auto focus filter region among the grid structure is narrower than a second width of a second grid portion disposed adjacent the second auto focus filter region among the grid structure.
