DISPLAY METHOD FOR CONTROLLING BRIGHTNESS ADAPTATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18184539 titled 'DISPLAY METHOD FOR CONTROLLING BRIGHTNESS ADAPTATION

Simplified Explanation: This patent application describes a method for a display device to adjust the brightness of a color image projected into the eye based on the position of the fovea (the central part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision) and external brightness levels.

  • The display device receives signals related to the position of the fovea and external brightness.
  • It then projects a color image into the eye at varying angles based on these signals.
  • If the external brightness falls below a certain threshold, the color image is focused only on the retinal target area.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Adaptive brightness control based on fovea position and external brightness.
  • Varying projection angles of color image based on position and brightness signals.
  • Confined color image to retinal target area under low brightness conditions.

Potential Applications:

  • Medical devices for vision correction.
  • Virtual reality and augmented reality headsets.
  • Automotive heads-up displays.

Problems Solved:

  • Ensures optimal brightness and visibility based on eye position and external lighting conditions.
  • Prevents discomfort or strain caused by overly bright or dim displays.

Benefits:

  • Improved visual comfort and clarity.
  • Enhanced user experience in various display applications.
  • Potential for reducing eye strain and fatigue.

Commercial Applications:

  • "Adaptive Brightness Control for Display Devices: Enhancing User Experience and Comfort"
  • This technology can be utilized in consumer electronics, medical devices, automotive displays, and more.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method of operation of a display device for controlling brightness adaptation comprises (a) receiving a position signal that varies in dependence on a position of a fovea of an eye; (b) receiving a brightness signal that varies in dependence on brightness external to the display device; and (c) projecting a color image into the eye over a range of angles that varies in dependence on the position signal and on the brightness signal, such that when the brightness is below a predetermined threshold the color image is confined to the retinal target area.
