MAP GENERATION APPARATUS, MAP GENERATION METHOD, AND NON-TRANSITORY COMPUTER-READABLE MEDIUM STORING PROGRAM - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18036624 titled 'MAP GENERATION APPARATUS, MAP GENERATION METHOD, AND NON-TRANSITORY COMPUTER-READABLE MEDIUM STORING PROGRAM
Simplified Explanation
The abstract describes a map generation apparatus that improves the quality of an environment map created using virtual images. The apparatus includes a map generation unit that generates a three-dimensional map of the environment around a photographing device by identifying shooting locations and restoring three-dimensional positions of feature points in still images. A virtual image is generated by shooting the three-dimensional positions of the feature points from a virtual viewpoint. The three-dimensional map is then updated with reference to the virtual feature points in the virtual image.
- The apparatus generates a three-dimensional map of the environment based on still images and feature points.
- It generates a virtual image by shooting the three-dimensional positions of the feature points from a virtual viewpoint.
- The three-dimensional map is updated using the virtual feature points in the virtual image.
Potential Applications
- This technology can be used in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications to create realistic and accurate environment maps.
- It can be used in navigation systems to provide detailed and up-to-date maps of the surroundings.
- The apparatus can be used in autonomous vehicles to generate accurate maps of the environment for navigation and obstacle detection.
Problems Solved
- The apparatus solves the problem of generating high-quality environment maps using virtual images.
- It addresses the challenge of accurately identifying shooting locations and restoring three-dimensional positions of feature points in still images.
- The technology solves the problem of updating the three-dimensional map with reference to virtual feature points in a virtual image.
Benefits
- The technology improves the quality and accuracy of environment maps, leading to more realistic and immersive virtual reality experiences.
- It enables navigation systems to provide more detailed and up-to-date maps, enhancing user experience and safety.
- The apparatus helps autonomous vehicles to navigate and detect obstacles more effectively by providing accurate environment maps.
Original Abstract Submitted
An object is to provide a map generation apparatus for improving the quality of an environment map created using virtual images. A map generation apparatus () according to the present disclosure includes: a map generation unit () configured to generate a three-dimensional map showing an environment around a photographing device by identifying shooting locations of a plurality of still images shot by the photographing device and restoring three-dimensional positions of feature points marked in each image of the plurality of the still images; a generation unit () configured to generate a virtual image when the three-dimensional positions of each of the feature points on the three-dimensional map corresponding to the feature points in the still images are shot from a virtual viewpoint; and an update unit () configured to update the three-dimensional map with reference to the virtual feature points in the virtual image.
