REPLICATING STORAGE DATA AND METADATA IN SEPARATE STORAGE LAYERS OF A DISTRIBUTED STORAGE SYSTEM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18069725 titled 'REPLICATING STORAGE DATA AND METADATA IN SEPARATE STORAGE LAYERS OF A DISTRIBUTED STORAGE SYSTEM

Simplified Explanation:

The abstract describes a method for replicating storage data and metadata in separate storage layers of a distributed storage system using separate channels.

  • First gateway identifies data object for replication to a second data center
  • First gateway accesses metadata to determine corresponding storage data on a first storage node
  • Metadata is transmitted to a second gateway in the second data center via a first network
  • Command is sent to the first storage node to transmit storage data to a second storage node in the second data center via a second network

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Replication of data and metadata in separate storage layers
  • Use of separate channels for replication
  • Efficient transmission of metadata and storage data between data centers

Potential Applications:

  • Cloud storage systems
  • Data backup and disaster recovery solutions
  • Content delivery networks

Problems Solved:

  • Efficient replication of data and metadata in distributed storage systems
  • Improved data redundancy and availability
  • Simplified management of storage resources

Benefits:

  • Enhanced data protection and redundancy
  • Faster data recovery in case of failures
  • Scalability and flexibility in storage management

Commercial Applications:

  • Cloud service providers
  • Data centers
  • Enterprise storage solutions market

Questions about the Technology:

1. How does this method improve data replication efficiency in distributed storage systems? 2. What are the key advantages of separating data and metadata replication channels in storage systems?

Original Abstract Submitted

Storage data and metadata in separate storage layers of a distributed storage system can be replicated via separate channels. For example, a first gateway at a first storage layer in a first data center can identify a data object for replication to a second data center. The first gateway can access metadata to determine that the data object corresponds to a set of storage data on a first storage node in the first data center. The first gateway can then transmit the metadata to a second gateway in the second data center via a first network. The first gateway can also transmit a command to the first storage node for causing the first storage node to transmit the set of storage data to a second storage node in the second data center via a second network.
