METHODS, SYSTEMS, AND MEDIA FOR SELECTING VIDEO FORMATS FOR ADAPTIVE VIDEO STREAMING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18433306 titled 'METHODS, SYSTEMS, AND MEDIA FOR SELECTING VIDEO FORMATS FOR ADAPTIVE VIDEO STREAMING

The method described in the abstract involves optimizing the presentation of videos on a user device based on network connection quality and predicted viewership scores.

  • Receiving an indication of the first video to be presented on a user device
  • Determining predicted viewership scores for different video formats based on video features
  • Selecting a format for the first video based on the predicted viewership scores
  • Monitoring the quality of the network connection during video presentation
  • Identifying a change in network connection quality when a second video is indicated
  • Deciding whether to change the format of the second video based on the network connection change
  • Presenting the second video on the user device accordingly

Potential Applications: - Video streaming services - Content delivery networks - Online advertising platforms

Problems Solved: - Optimizing video presentation based on network conditions - Enhancing user experience with seamless video playback

Benefits: - Improved video streaming quality - Better user engagement with content - Efficient use of network resources

Commercial Applications: Title: "Enhanced Video Presentation Optimization Technology" This technology can be utilized by streaming platforms, advertisers, and content providers to deliver high-quality videos to users based on network conditions, leading to increased viewer satisfaction and engagement.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method is provided that may include receiving, at a server, an indication of a first video to be presented on a user device, determining, at the server based on video features of the first video, a group of predicted viewership scores for each format from a group of available formats for the first video, selecting, at the server, a first format for the first video based on the group of predicted viewership scores for the first video, causing the first video to be presented on the user device, identifying a quality of a network connection between the user device and the server that hosts the first video during the presentation of the first video on the user device, receiving an indication of a second video to be presented on the user device, identifying a change in the quality of the network connection between the user device and the server, determining whether a format of the second video is to be changed from the first format to a second format based at least in part on the change in the quality of the network connection between the user device and the server, and in response to determining that the format of the second video is not to be changed from the first format to the second format, causing the second video to be presented by the user device.
