SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR FABRICATING RING STRUCTURES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18385554 titled 'SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR FABRICATING RING STRUCTURES

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for fabricating ring structures using a pulsed laser beam to create perforations in a substrate, followed by heating to separate the ring structure from the substrate.

  • The method involves forming inner and outer contours with perforations using a pulsed laser beam.
  • Heating the outer contour with a heating laser beam to separate the ring structure from the substrate.
  • Removing an inner portion of the article at the inner contour to form the ring structure.

Potential Applications

The technology could be used in the fabrication of microelectronic devices, sensors, or optical components that require precise ring structures.

Problems Solved

This method allows for the precise fabrication of ring structures with complex geometries that may be difficult to achieve using traditional manufacturing techniques.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include high precision, scalability, and the ability to create intricate ring structures with minimal material waste.

Potential Commercial Applications

One potential commercial application of this technology could be in the production of microelectronic devices where precise ring structures are needed for functionality.

Possible Prior Art

Prior art in the field of laser micromachining and laser cutting may exist, but specific examples related to the fabrication of ring structures using the described method would need to be researched further.

Unanswered Questions

How does this method compare to traditional manufacturing techniques for fabricating ring structures?

This method offers high precision and the ability to create complex geometries, but it would be important to compare factors such as cost, speed, and scalability with traditional methods.

What materials are compatible with this fabrication method?

The abstract mentions using a substrate, but it would be important to understand the range of materials that can be used with this method and any limitations in material compatibility.

Original Abstract Submitted

Systems and methods for fabricating ring structures are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of forming a ring structure includes forming an inner contour and an outer contour including a plurality of perforations by directing a pulsed laser beam focal line into a substrate at a plurality of locations, the pulsed laser beam focal line generating an induced absorption within a substrate at each of the locations, the induced absorption producing one of the plurality of perforations. The method further includes heating the outer contour with a heating laser beam such that an article separates from the substrate at the outer contour, heating a region of the article between an outer edge of the article and the inner contour with the heating laser beam, and removing an inner portion of the article at the inner contour to form the ring structure.
