ULTRASONIC FLOW METER - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18281658 titled 'ULTRASONIC FLOW METER

Simplified Explanation

The ultrasonic flow meter described in the patent application includes a cylindrical passage, a pair of ultrasonic transducers, a measuring unit, an arithmetic circuit, and a partition plate. The measuring unit measures the propagation time of ultrasound between the transducers, while the arithmetic circuit calculates the flow velocity or flow rate of the measurement fluid. The partition plate divides the cylindrical passage into multiple divided passages, including a normal propagation route and a shortcut propagation route. The shortcut propagation route creates a shortcut for the normal propagation route, and the partition plate includes a cutaway or opening portion at the region corresponding to the shortcut propagation route to allow communication between the divided passages.

  • Ultrasonic flow meter with cylindrical passage
  • Pair of ultrasonic transducers for measuring ultrasound propagation time
  • Arithmetic circuit for calculating flow velocity or flow rate
  • Partition plate dividing passage into divided passages
  • Shortcut propagation route with cutaway in partition plate

Unanswered Questions

How does this technology compare to traditional flow measurement methods?

This technology offers non-intrusive flow measurement capabilities, which can be more cost-effective and easier to install compared to traditional methods like mechanical flow meters.

What are the potential limitations of this ultrasonic flow meter technology?

Potential limitations may include sensitivity to external factors such as temperature variations or changes in fluid properties, which could affect the accuracy of flow rate measurements.

Original Abstract Submitted

An ultrasonic flow meter includes a cylindrical passage; a pair of ultrasonic transducers; a measuring unit, an arithmetic circuit, and a partition plate. The measuring unit measures a propagation time of ultrasound from one to the other of the ultrasonic transducers. The arithmetic unit operates flow velocity or flow rate of the measurement fluid. The partition plate divides the cylindrical passage into a plurality of divided passages. The cylindrical passage includes a normal propagation route and a shortcut propagation route that makes a shortcut for the normal propagation route through which ultrasound propagates from one of the ultrasonic transducers to the other of the ultrasonic transducers. The partition plate is formed, at a region corresponding to the shortcut propagation route, with a cutaway or opening portion through which the divided passages communicate with each other.
