SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR HANDLING IGP FLOODING TOPOLOGY INCONSISTENCY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18516090 titled 'SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR HANDLING IGP FLOODING TOPOLOGY INCONSISTENCY

Simplified Explanation

The network node (N) described in the patent application is designed to handle IGP flooding topology (FT) inconsistency by updating the FT and setting a flag field in a data packet to indicate the status of a link between N and another node. Here is a simplified explanation of the patent application:

  • N obtains a new FT and sets a FT flag field in a data packet to indicate the status of a link.
  • N transmits the data packet to another node.
  • N receives a second data packet from the other node with the FT flag field set.
  • N compares the FT flag fields to determine if there is an inconsistency in the new FT.
  • N updates a FT inconsistency field in a link state packet to indicate any inconsistencies.
  • N distributes the link state packet to other nodes in the network.

Potential Applications: - Network routing protocols - Network management systems

Problems Solved: - Handling inconsistencies in network topology information - Improving network reliability and efficiency

Benefits: - Enhanced network performance - Reduced network downtime - Improved network troubleshooting capabilities

Potential Commercial Applications: - Networking equipment manufacturers - Telecommunication companies - Internet service providers

Possible Prior Art: - Previous methods for handling network topology inconsistencies - Existing network routing protocols

Unanswered Questions: 1. How does the network node handle cases where multiple nodes report conflicting information about the same link? 2. What impact does the FT inconsistency field have on network performance and stability?

Original Abstract Submitted

A network node (N) for handling IGP flooding topology (FT) inconsistency by obtaining a new FT and setting a FT flag field (FT field) in a data packet (DP) to indicate whether a link between N and a second node (N) is on the new FT. N transmits the DP to N. N receives a second DP from N that includes the FT field set by N to indicate whether the link between the network node and N is on the new FT as determined by N. N sets a FT inconsistency field in a link state packet to indicate an inconsistency in the new FT when the FT field set by N and the FT field set by N are different for a given time. N distributes the LS to at least one node in the network.
