GEOMETRIC APPROACH TO STRESS REDUCED INTRA-FLOW PATH SHROUDS FOR TUNING MODAL RESPONSES IN RAM AIR TURBINE ROTORS - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18365118 titled 'GEOMETRIC APPROACH TO STRESS REDUCED INTRA-FLOW PATH SHROUDS FOR TUNING MODAL RESPONSES IN RAM AIR TURBINE ROTORS
Simplified Explanation
The abstract describes a ram air turbine rotor with shroud structures between blades, each including curved segments defined by ellipses.
- The ram air turbine rotor includes shroud structures between blades.
- Each shroud sector has a first edge with a curved segment near leading edges and a second edge with a curved segment near trailing edges.
- The curved segments are partially defined by ellipses with semi-major and semi-minor axes.
- The semi-major axis is a portion of the spanwise distance between the pair of blades, while the semi-minor axis is a portion of the axial distance between the leading edge of one blade and the trailing edge of an adjacent blade.
Potential Applications
The ram air turbine rotor design could be used in aircraft systems to generate power from the airflow during flight.
Problems Solved
This technology helps improve the efficiency and performance of ram air turbines by optimizing the airflow between blades.
Benefits
The use of shroud structures with curved segments helps enhance the power generation capabilities of ram air turbine rotors.
Potential Commercial Applications
The optimized design of the ram air turbine rotor could be beneficial for aircraft manufacturers looking to improve the power generation systems in their vehicles.
Possible Prior Art
One possible prior art could be the use of shroud structures in turbine rotors to improve efficiency, but the specific design with curved segments defined by ellipses may be a novel approach.
Unanswered Questions
How does the curved segment design impact the overall efficiency of the ram air turbine rotor?
The abstract mentions that the curved segments are defined by ellipses, but it does not elaborate on how this design feature specifically affects the efficiency of the rotor.
Are there any limitations or drawbacks to using shroud structures with curved segments in ram air turbine rotors?
While the abstract highlights the benefits of this design, it does not mention any potential limitations or drawbacks that may arise from implementing such a system.
Original Abstract Submitted
A ram air turbine rotor comprises at least one intra-flow path shroud structure coupled between rotor blades, along a radial position between a support disc and an outer rim. The shroud structure includes shroud sectors each coupled between a respective pair of blades. The sectors each include a first edge adjacent to leading edges of the respective pair of blades, the first edge including a first curved segment, and a second edge adjacent to trailing edges of the respective pair of blades, the second edge including a second curved segment. The curved segments are each partially defined by a respective ellipse having a semi-major axis and a semi-minor axis. The semi-major axis is a portion of a spanwise distance between the respective pair of blades. The semi-minor axis is a portion of an axial distance between the leading edge of one blade and the trailing edge of an adjacent blade.
