IMAGE CAPTURING APPARATUS FOR CAPTURING AND COMPOSITING IMAGES DIFFERENT IN IN-FOCUS POSITION, CONTROL METHOD, AND STORAGE MEDIUM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18460261 titled 'IMAGE CAPTURING APPARATUS FOR CAPTURING AND COMPOSITING IMAGES DIFFERENT IN IN-FOCUS POSITION, CONTROL METHOD, AND STORAGE MEDIUM

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an apparatus that captures multiple images at different focus positions to create a composite image with enhanced focus, specifically designed for selfies.

  • Sensor captures multiple images at different focus positions
  • Processor controls sensor and generates composite image
  • Determination unit identifies when a selfie is being taken
  • Control unit triggers image capture and composite image generation for selfies

Potential Applications

This technology can be used in smartphones, tablets, and other devices with front-facing cameras to improve the quality of selfies by creating sharper and more focused images.

Problems Solved

1. Blurry selfies due to limited focus capabilities of front-facing cameras 2. Difficulty in capturing well-focused selfies in low light conditions

Benefits

1. Enhanced image quality for selfies 2. Improved user experience when taking self-portraits 3. Increased satisfaction with selfie results

Original Abstract Submitted

An apparatus includes a sensor configured to capture a plurality of images different in in-focus position in an optical axis direction, and at least one processor configured to function as a control unit configured to control the sensor, a composition unit configured to generate, from the plurality of images, a composite image including an area more focused than each of the plurality of images, and a determination unit configured to determine whether a selfie is being taken. In a case where the selfie is being taken and a predetermined condition is satisfied, the control unit controls the sensor to capture the plurality of images, and the composition unit generates the composite image.
