a method of operation is provided. during this operating method, a parameter of an engine of an aircraft is determined. the parameter is compared to a threshold using a monitoring unit controller onboard the aircraft. the threshold is established by an electrical resistance of a circuit component onboard the aircraft which is external to the monitoring unit controller. an action is initiated using the monitoring unit controller where the parameter is greater than or equal to the threshold.
