PRODUCING POLYCRYSTALLINE DIAMOND COMPACT CUTTERS WITH COATINGS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17549290 titled 'PRODUCING POLYCRYSTALLINE DIAMOND COMPACT CUTTERS WITH COATINGS

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a patent application for a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter used in tools. The PDC cutter is formed on a substrate, which includes tungsten carbide. The cutter has a cross-sectional dimension of at least 4 millimeters and is coated with a single layer of coating using atomic layer deposition. This coating protects the cutter from thermal degradation when exposed to temperatures between 700°C and 1050°C.

  • Polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter is formed on a tungsten carbide substrate.
  • The cutter has a cross-sectional dimension of at least 4 millimeters.
  • The cutter is coated with a single layer of coating using atomic layer deposition.
  • The coating protects the cutter from thermal degradation at temperatures between 700°C and 1050°C.

Potential Applications

  • Cutting tools in industries such as mining, oil and gas, and construction.
  • Drilling tools for geothermal exploration.
  • Machining tools for high-temperature applications.

Problems Solved

  • Thermal degradation of polycrystalline diamond cutters at high temperatures.
  • Protection of the cutter from thermal damage during use.

Benefits

  • Extended lifespan of the PDC cutter.
  • Improved performance and efficiency in high-temperature applications.
  • Reduced need for frequent replacement of cutters.

Original Abstract Submitted

A polycrystalline diamond is formed on a substrate to form a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter for a tool. The polycrystalline diamond has a cross-sectional dimension of at least 4 millimeters. The substrate includes tungsten carbide. An outer surface of the PDC cutter is at least partially surrounded with at least a single layer of coating by atomic layer deposition. The single layer of coating is configured to protect the PDC cutter from thermal degradation in response to exposure to a temperature greater than 700 degrees Celsius (° C.) and less than about 1050° C.
