Method for Metering a Foamed or Foamable Plastic in a Preferably Discontinuous Manner with a Direct Gas Loading Process - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18746548 titled 'Method for Metering a Foamed or Foamable Plastic in a Preferably Discontinuous Manner with a Direct Gas Loading Process

The invention pertains to a method for metering a foamed or foamable plastic in a preferably discontinuous manner.

  • The plastic is conveyed into a mixing chamber of a mixing device where a stirring mechanism is arranged.
  • The plastic is loaded with a gas to influence foam formation.
  • The plastic is metered out through an outlet nozzle.
  • The pressure in the mixing chamber ranges from 0.2 bar to 15 bar.
  • The gas is injected into the plastic, preferably directly into the mixing chamber, by a valve device.
  • The stirring mechanism disperses the gas in the plastic.

Potential Applications: - Manufacturing of foam products in various industries such as packaging, construction, and automotive. - Production of lightweight materials for insulation and cushioning purposes.

Problems Solved: - Efficient and controlled metering of foamed or foamable plastics. - Consistent foam formation with the desired properties.

Benefits: - Improved product quality with uniform foam structure. - Cost-effective production process with precise metering capabilities.

Commercial Applications: Foam manufacturing companies can utilize this technology to enhance their production processes, leading to higher quality foam products and increased efficiency in manufacturing operations.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the gas injection process impact the foam formation in the plastic? 2. What are the advantages of metering foamed plastics in a discontinuous manner compared to continuous metering methods?

Original Abstract Submitted

The invention relates to a method for metering a foamed or foamable plastic () in a preferably discontinuous manner. At least one first component () for forming the plastic () is conveyed into a mixing chamber () of a mixing device () in which a stirring mechanism () that can be rotated about a rotational axis () is arranged. The first component () is loaded with a gas () in order to influence the formation of foam, and the plastic () is metered out of the mixing chamber () through an outlet nozzle (). According to the invention, the pressure in the mixing chamber () ranges from 0.2 bar to 15 bar, the gas () is injected into the first component (), preferably directly into the mixing chamber (), by a valve device (), and the stirring mechanism () disperses the gas () in the first component ().
