PROCESS FOR MODIFYING AN AQUEOUS POLYMER LATEX - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18294679 titled 'PROCESS FOR MODIFYING AN AQUEOUS POLYMER LATEX

The present invention involves a process for modifying an aqueous polymer latex by mixing it with a silane compound at a temperature of at least 60°C.

  • The process involves mixing the aqueous polymer latex with a silane compound of formula (1) at high temperature.
  • The silane compound has specific chemical properties, including the presence of an oxirane group.
  • The modified aqueous polymer latex obtained from this process can be used as binders or co-binders for industrial varnishes.

Potential Applications: - Industrial coatings - Paints - Adhesives

Problems Solved: - Enhancing the properties of aqueous polymer latex - Improving the performance of industrial varnishes

Benefits: - Increased durability of coatings - Improved adhesion - Enhanced chemical resistance

Commercial Applications: "Silane-Modified Aqueous Polymer Latex for Industrial Coatings and Varnishes"

Questions about Silane-Modified Aqueous Polymer Latex: 1. How does the addition of silane compounds improve the properties of the polymer latex? 2. What specific industrial applications can benefit from using this modified polymer latex?

Frequently Updated Research: New studies on the impact of silane-modified polymer latex on different types of industrial coatings and varnishes.

Original Abstract Submitted

The present invention relates to a process for modifying an aqueous polymer latex of polymer particles that bear carboxyl groups comprising the mixing of the aqueous polymer latex with at least one silane compound of formula (1) at a temperature of at least 60° C.: (RO)RSiRX (1) wherein R is C-C-alkyl, C-C-cycloalkyl, C-C-aryl, C-C-alkoxy-C-C-alkyl, C-C-alkenyl, C-C-alkyl-C-C-aryl or C-C-aryl-C-C-alkyl, R is C-C-alkyl, C-C-cycloalkyl, C-C-aryl, C-C- alkenyl, C-C-alkyl-C-C-aryl or C-C-aryl-C-C-alkyl, Ris a covalent chemical bond or a C1-C20-alkylene, in which non-adjacent methylene units can be replaced by O-groups, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3, and X is a radical having 3 to 10 carbon atoms and bearing an oxirane group. The present invention also relates to modified aqueous polymer latexes obtainable by such process and to the use of these polymer latexes as binders or co-binders for industrial varnishes.
