FIXING DEVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240345514 titled 'FIXING DEVICE

The patent application describes a fixing device that includes an endless and rotatable belt with a lubricated inner peripheral surface, a heater, a rotatable member to contact the belt, and a nip forming member in contact with the inner peripheral surface of the belt.

  • The nip forming member consists of a holding portion, an upstream sliding portion, and a downstream sliding portion.
  • The downstream and upstream sliding portions have first and second sliding surfaces that slide with the inner peripheral surface of the belt.
  • The second sliding surface has a curved shape, with a defined force applied to the belt and a curvature radius, ensuring a specific ratio of r/w for optimal performance.

Potential Applications: - This technology can be used in printing presses, laminating machines, and other industrial equipment that require precise fixing of materials. - It can also be applied in conveyor systems where materials need to be securely held in place during processing.

Problems Solved: - Ensures consistent and reliable fixing of materials without slippage or misalignment. - Helps in preventing damage to materials due to improper fixing during processing.

Benefits: - Improved efficiency and accuracy in material handling processes. - Reduced maintenance and downtime due to reliable fixing mechanisms.

Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Fixing Device for Industrial Machinery This technology can be utilized in various industries such as printing, packaging, and textile manufacturing to enhance the quality and efficiency of production processes.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the curved shape of the second sliding surface contribute to the performance of the fixing device? - The curved shape helps distribute the force applied to the belt evenly, ensuring secure fixing without causing damage to the materials. 2. What are the key advantages of using a belt with a lubricated inner peripheral surface in this fixing device? - The lubricant reduces friction, allowing smooth rotation of the belt and preventing overheating during operation.

Original Abstract Submitted

a fixing device includes an endless and rotatable belt of which an inner peripheral surface is applied with lubricant, a heater, a rotatable member to rotatably contact the belt and a nip forming member in contact with the inner peripheral surface of the belt. the nip forming member includes a holding portion, an upstream sliding portion and a downstream sliding portion. the downstream and upstream sliding portions have first and second sliding surfaces sliding with the inner peripheral surface of the belt, respectively. the second sliding surface has a curved shape, and when a force applied to the belt with respect to a length of the second sliding surface is defined as w (n/mm) and a curvature radius of the second sliding surface is defined as r (mm), r/w of the second sliding surface is equal to 5 (mm/n) or larger and equal to 80 (mm/n) or less.
