METHOD AND DEVICE FOR MEASURING HEART RATE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240341609 titled 'METHOD AND DEVICE FOR MEASURING HEART RATE

The abstract describes a method for measuring heart rate using light and photodetectors, with a focus on eliminating motion artifacts to accurately calculate heart rate.

  • Illuminating a body portion with light
  • Detecting light scattered by tissues and blood particles using photodetectors
  • Using pairs of photodetectors connected in anti-parallel to eliminate motion artifacts
  • Converting analog photocurrent signals into digital signals
  • Calculating the heart rate from peaks of the digital signal envelope

Potential Applications: - Medical devices for monitoring heart rate - Fitness trackers for accurate heart rate tracking during exercise - Wearable technology for continuous heart rate monitoring

Problems Solved: - Accurate heart rate measurement in the presence of motion artifacts - Reliable monitoring of heart rate in various settings and activities

Benefits: - Improved accuracy in heart rate monitoring - Enhanced reliability of heart rate data for medical and fitness purposes - Non-invasive method for continuous heart rate measurement

Commercial Applications: Title: "Advanced Heart Rate Monitoring Technology for Medical and Fitness Devices" This technology can be used in medical devices, fitness trackers, and wearable technology for commercial applications in healthcare, sports, and wellness industries.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does this method compare to traditional heart rate monitoring techniques?

  - This method offers improved accuracy and reliability, especially in the presence of motion artifacts.

2. What are the potential limitations of using light-based heart rate monitoring?

Original Abstract Submitted

a method for measuring heart rate is provided. the method includes illuminating a body portion with light, detecting light scattered by tissues of the body portion and blood particles by a plurality of photodetectors including at least one pair of photodetectors which are connected in anti-parallel in each pair of photodetectors, eliminating a frequency component of motion artifacts in an analog photocurrent differential signal by subtracting a first analog photocurrent signal detected by a first photodetector of a pair of photodetectors of the at least one pair of the photodetectors from a second analog photocurrent signal detected by a second photodetector of the pair of photodetectors, converting the analog photocurrent differential signal into an analog voltage differential signal, converting the analog voltage differential signal into a digital differential signal, calculating an envelope of the digital differential signal, and calculating the heart rate from peaks of the calculated envelope of the digital differential signal.
