Occlusion of Virtual Objects in Augmented Reality by Physical Objects - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240346772 titled 'Occlusion of Virtual Objects in Augmented Reality by Physical Objects

The abstract describes systems and methods for occluding virtual objects in an augmented reality environment. This involves generating a distance map of a physical object, determining the location of a virtual object, identifying portions of the physical object that obstruct the virtual object from the user's viewpoint, and rendering a display image accordingly.

  • Generating a distance map of a physical object
  • Determining the location of a virtual object in an augmented reality environment
  • Identifying obstructed portions of the physical object from the user's viewpoint
  • Rendering a display image with pixels corresponding to visible and obstructed portions of the virtual object
  • Ensuring a realistic and seamless integration of virtual objects with the physical environment

Potential Applications: - Augmented reality gaming - Industrial design and prototyping - Medical training and simulations - Architectural visualization - Virtual tours and tourism experiences

Problems Solved: - Enhancing the realism and immersion of augmented reality experiences - Improving the interaction between virtual and physical objects - Minimizing visual inconsistencies and disruptions in augmented reality environments

Benefits: - Enhanced user experience in augmented reality applications - Increased accuracy and precision in occluding virtual objects - Seamless integration of virtual content with the physical environment

Commercial Applications: "Advanced Occlusion Techniques for Augmented Reality Environments: Enhancing User Experience and Realism"

Questions about Advanced Occlusion Techniques for Augmented Reality Environments: 1. How do advanced occlusion techniques improve the user experience in augmented reality environments? 2. What are the key challenges in implementing realistic occlusion of virtual objects in a physical environment?

Original Abstract Submitted

systems and methods for occluding virtual objects in an augmented reality environment are described. a method includes generating a distance map associated with a physical object, determining a location of a virtual object in an artificial-reality environment, determining, based at least in part upon the distance map and the location of the virtual object, a first portion of the physical object that is closer than a first portion of the virtual object from the viewpoint of the user, determining a second portion of the virtual object that is not obscured by the physical object from the viewpoint of the user, and rendering a display image. the display image comprises a first set of pixels corresponding to the first portion of the physical object in a first state, and the display image comprises a second set of pixels corresponding to the second portion of the virtual object in a second state.
