WIFI ROAM WITH BAND SWITCH AVOIDANCE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240340872 titled 'WIFI ROAM WITH BAND SWITCH AVOIDANCE

The abstract describes a wireless device that utilizes the 5 GHz frequency band to support both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The frequency band is divided into two sub-bands, with the device performing a roam scan to find a suitable channel within these sub-bands.

  • The wireless device can operate on both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth using the 5 GHz frequency band.
  • The 5 GHz frequency band is divided into high and low sub-bands for efficient channel selection.
  • The Wi-Fi module of the device conducts a roam scan on the first sub-band to find a candidate channel that meets specific criteria.
  • If a suitable channel is found on the first sub-band, the device will join that channel.
  • In cases where no acceptable channel is found, the device will perform a band switch protocol to scan the second sub-band.

Potential Applications: - This technology can be used in various wireless devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. - It can improve the efficiency and performance of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections in crowded environments.

Problems Solved: - Efficient channel selection in the 5 GHz frequency band for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. - Seamless transition between sub-bands to ensure optimal connection quality.

Benefits: - Enhanced connectivity and performance for wireless devices. - Improved user experience with faster and more reliable connections.

Commercial Applications: - This technology can be integrated into consumer electronics, IoT devices, and networking equipment to enhance wireless connectivity. - It can be marketed to manufacturers looking to improve the performance of their wireless products.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the device prioritize channel selection in the 5 GHz frequency band? - The device uses a roam scan to find a candidate channel that meets specific criteria, prioritizing performance and reliability.

2. What are the advantages of dividing the 5 GHz frequency band into sub-bands for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth operation? - Dividing the frequency band allows for more efficient channel selection and improved connectivity in wireless devices.

Original Abstract Submitted

a wireless device may use a 5 ghz frequency band to support both wi-fi and bluetooth. the 5 ghz frequency band may be divided into two portions (e.g., high sub-band and low sub-band). a wi-fi module of the wireless device may perform a roam scan on a first sub-band to determine attempt to find a candidate channel that meets a target criteria. when the candidate channel that meets the target criteria is found on the first sub-band, the wi-fi module may join the candidate channel. if no acceptable candidate channel is found, the wireless device may perform a band switch protocol to allow the wi-fi module to preform a roam scan on a second sub-band.
