COMBINED EYE AND ENVIRONMENT SENSING FOR A HEAD-MOUNTED DEVICE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240337840 titled 'COMBINED EYE AND ENVIRONMENT SENSING FOR A HEAD-MOUNTED DEVICE

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an eye and environment sensing system for a head-mounted device that uses a common light source to detect changes in eye orientation and range of objects in the environment. This system includes a light source, a first photodetector, and a second photodetector.

  • The system uses a shared light source to reduce battery consumption in the head-mounted device.
  • The light source illuminates the eyebox region and the environment, while the photodetectors receive reflections of the light beam to determine changes in eye orientation and range of objects in the environment.

Key Features and Innovation

  • Shared light source for eye and environment sensing
  • Reduction in battery consumption
  • Detection of changes in eye orientation and range of objects

Questions about Eye and Environment Sensing System

How does the shared light source contribute to reducing battery consumption?

The shared light source eliminates the need for separate light sources for eye and environment sensing, thus reducing overall power usage in the head-mounted device.

What are the potential market implications of this technology in the gaming industry?

The technology could revolutionize gaming peripherals by offering more accurate eye tracking capabilities, leading to immersive gaming experiences and enhanced gameplay features.

Original Abstract Submitted

an eye and environment sensing system for a head-mounted device may be configured to determine changes in an eye orientation and range objects in the environment by sharing a common light source. the eye and environment sensing system includes a light source, a first photodetector, and a second photodetector. the light source is coupled to a frame of a head-mounted device and configured to provide a light beam to illuminate a portion of an eyebox region. the first photodetector is coupled to the frame and is oriented towards the eyebox region to receive reflections of the light beam from the eyebox region. the second photodetector is coupled to the frame and is oriented towards a scene side of the head-mounted device to receive reflections of the light beam from an environment of the head-mounted device. with a shared light source, battery consumption in the head-mounted device may be reduced.
