APPARATUS AND METHODS FOR UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS 4 (USB4) DATA BANDWIDTH SCALING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240330230 titled 'APPARATUS AND METHODS FOR UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS 4 (USB4) DATA BANDWIDTH SCALING

The abstract describes a data scaling module for USB4 that incorporates display driver (DD) and connection manager (CM) operations. It monitors periodic and aperiodic transfer requests, as well as the bandwidth activity on periodic peripherals like display panels (DPs). When a high aperiodic bandwidth request is received, the module reduces the original refresh rate for the DP to free up USB4 bandwidth for the aperiodic task. Once the aperiodic task is completed, the module increases the refresh rate back to its original value.

  • Monitors periodic and aperiodic transfer requests
  • Tracks bandwidth activity on periodic peripherals like display panels
  • Reduces refresh rate for DP in response to high aperiodic bandwidth request
  • Frees up USB4 bandwidth for aperiodic tasks
  • Increases refresh rate back to original value after aperiodic task completion

Potential Applications: - Optimizing data transfer in USB4 devices - Enhancing display performance on connected peripherals

Problems Solved: - Efficient allocation of bandwidth for both periodic and aperiodic tasks - Seamless adjustment of refresh rates based on bandwidth requirements

Original Abstract Submitted

a data scaling module for usb4 that embodies display driver (dd) and connection manager (cm) operations. periodic and aperiodic transfer requests are monitored. the periodic bw activity on periodic peripherals, such as display panels (dps) is monitored, and determinations as to reduced periodic activity on a dp are made. responsive to receiving a high aperiodic bandwidth request, the original refresh rate for the dp is reduced. the newly freed usb4 bw is provided for the aperiodic task. at completion of the aperiodic task, the dd increases the refresh rate to its original value.
