Auto-injector - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18680073 titled 'Auto-injector
The abstract describes an auto-injector for administering a dose of liquid medicament, which includes a housing containing a syringe with a needle and stopper, capable of delivering the medicament through an orifice against an injection site.
- The auto-injector features an elongate housing with a syringe that can be slidably arranged within.
- A spring is activated to push the needle through the orifice, dispense the medicament, and retract the syringe back into the housing.
- An activator locks the spring in a pressurized state before manual operation, releasing it upon manual operation for injection.
Potential Applications: - Medical facilities - Home healthcare settings - Emergency response situations
Problems Solved: - Facilitates quick and easy administration of liquid medicament - Reduces the risk of needlestick injuries - Ensures accurate dosing of medication
Benefits: - Improved patient compliance with medication regimens - Enhanced safety for healthcare providers - Efficient and precise delivery of medicament
Commercial Applications: Auto-injectors can be used in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and home care, to administer medications quickly and safely.
Questions about the technology: 1. How does the auto-injector prevent needlestick injuries? - The auto-injector features a retractable needle that is safely enclosed within the housing when not in use. 2. What types of medicaments can be administered using this auto-injector? - The auto-injector can be used to administer a wide range of liquid medications, as long as they are compatible with the syringe and needle system.
Original Abstract Submitted
An auto-injector for administering a dose of a liquid medicament includes an elongate housing arranged to contain a syringe with a hollow needle and a stopper for sealing the syringe and displacing the medicament, the housing having a distal end and a proximal end with an orifice intended to be applied against an injection site. The syringe is slidably arranged with respect to the housing. A spring capable of, upon activation: pushing the needle from a covered position inside the housing into an advanced position through the orifice and past the proximal end (P), operating the syringe to supply the dose of medicament (M), and retracting the syringe with the needle into the covered position. After delivering the medicament, an activator arranged to lock the spring in a pressurized state prior to manual operation and capable of, upon manual operation, releasing the spring for injection.
