Auto-injector - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18679813 titled 'Auto-injector

The abstract describes an auto-injector for administering a dose of liquid medicament, including a housing containing a syringe with a needle and stopper, capable of delivering the medicament through an orifice upon activation of a spring mechanism.

  • The auto-injector includes an elongate housing with a syringe containing a needle and stopper.
  • A spring mechanism is activated to push the needle through an orifice for injection.
  • The syringe is operated to supply the dose of medicament.
  • The spring retracts the syringe and needle back into the housing after injection.
  • An activator locks the spring in a pressurized state before manual operation and releases it for injection upon manual operation.

Potential Applications: - Medical facilities for quick and efficient administration of medication. - Emergency situations where immediate injection is necessary. - Home use for self-administration of medication.

Problems Solved: - Provides a convenient and reliable method for administering medication. - Reduces the risk of needlestick injuries. - Ensures accurate dosing of medication.

Benefits: - Easy to use and portable for on-the-go medication administration. - Minimizes the risk of user error in dosing. - Increases efficiency in delivering medication.

Commercial Applications: Auto-injectors can be marketed to healthcare facilities, pharmacies, and individuals requiring regular medication administration. The technology can also be licensed to pharmaceutical companies for use with specific medications.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the spring mechanism ensure accurate dosing of the medication? - The spring mechanism is designed to operate the syringe precisely to deliver the correct dose of medication. 2. What safety features are included in the auto-injector to prevent accidental needlesticks? - The auto-injector is designed to retract the needle back into the housing after use, reducing the risk of injuries.

Original Abstract Submitted

An auto-injector for administering a dose of a liquid medicament includes an elongate housing arranged to contain a syringe with a hollow needle and a stopper for sealing the syringe and displacing the medicament, the housing having a distal end and a proximal end with an orifice intended to be applied against an injection site. The syringe is slidably arranged with respect to the housing. A spring capable of, upon activation: pushing the needle from a covered position inside the housing into an advanced position through the orifice and past the proximal end (P), operating the syringe to supply the dose of medicament (M), and retracting the syringe with the needle into the covered position. After delivering the medicament, an activator arranged to lock the spring in a pressurized state prior to manual operation and capable of, upon manual operation, releasing the spring for injection.
