Auto-injector - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18678364 titled 'Auto-injector

The abstract describes an auto-injector for administering a dose of liquid medicament, which includes a housing containing a syringe with a needle and a stopper, capable of delivering the medicament through an orifice at the proximal end of the housing.

  • The auto-injector features a spring that activates to push the needle into an advanced position for injection, operate the syringe to deliver the medicament, and retract the needle back into the housing after use.
  • An activator locks the spring in a pressurized state before manual operation and releases it upon manual activation for injection.
  • The design allows for easy and efficient administration of liquid medicament through a simple and user-friendly mechanism.
  • The auto-injector ensures accurate dosing and minimizes the risk of needlestick injuries.
  • The device is suitable for self-administration or by healthcare professionals in various settings.

Potential Applications: - Medical facilities - Home healthcare settings - Emergency response situations

Problems Solved: - Accurate dosing of liquid medicament - Minimization of needlestick injuries - Ease of use for self-administration

Benefits: - Improved medication delivery - Enhanced safety for healthcare providers and patients - Convenient and efficient administration process

Commercial Applications: Auto-injectors like this one could be used in hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and by individuals with chronic conditions requiring regular injections.

Questions about the technology: 1. How does the auto-injector ensure accurate dosing of the liquid medicament? 2. What safety features are incorporated into the design to prevent needlestick injuries?

Original Abstract Submitted

An auto-injector for administering a dose of a liquid medicament includes an elongate housing arranged to contain a syringe with a hollow needle and a stopper for sealing the syringe and displacing the medicament, the housing having a distal end and a proximal end with an orifice intended to be applied against an injection site. The syringe is slidably arranged with respect to the housing. A spring capable of, upon activation: pushing the needle from a covered position inside the housing into an advanced position through the orifice and past the proximal end (P), operating the syringe to supply the dose of medicament (M), and retracting the syringe with the needle into the covered position. After delivering the medicament, an activator arranged to lock the spring in a pressurized state prior to manual operation and capable of, upon manual operation, releasing the spring for injection.
