Auto-injector - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18678282 titled 'Auto-injector

The abstract describes an auto-injector for administering a dose of liquid medicament, consisting of an elongate housing containing a syringe with a hollow needle and a stopper, with the syringe being slidably arranged within the housing. The device includes a spring capable of pushing the needle into an advanced position through an orifice for injection, operating the syringe to deliver the medicament, and retracting the syringe back into the housing. An activator locks the spring in a pressurized state before manual operation, releasing it upon manual operation for injection.

  • The auto-injector includes an elongate housing with a syringe containing a hollow needle and stopper.
  • A spring is used to push the needle into an advanced position for injection and retract it back into the housing.
  • An activator locks the spring in a pressurized state before manual operation, releasing it for injection upon manual operation.
  • The device is designed for easy and efficient administration of liquid medicament doses.
  • The auto-injector provides a convenient and reliable method for self-administration of medication.

Potential Applications: - Medical facilities - Home healthcare settings - Emergency response situations

Problems Solved: - Simplifies the process of administering liquid medicament doses - Provides a reliable and efficient method for injection - Allows for self-administration of medication

Benefits: - Easy to use - Quick and efficient administration of medication - Suitable for various healthcare settings

Commercial Applications: Auto-injectors like this one could have significant commercial applications in the pharmaceutical industry, medical device market, and healthcare sector. The convenience and efficiency of this device make it an attractive option for patients and healthcare providers alike.

Questions about the auto-injector technology: 1. How does the spring mechanism work in the auto-injector? The spring in the auto-injector is responsible for pushing the needle into an advanced position for injection, operating the syringe to deliver the medicament, and retracting the syringe back into the housing after use.

2. What are the potential market implications of this auto-injector technology? The auto-injector technology has the potential to revolutionize the way liquid medicaments are administered, offering a convenient and efficient solution for patients and healthcare providers.

Original Abstract Submitted

An auto-injector for administering a dose of a liquid medicament includes an elongate housing arranged to contain a syringe with a hollow needle and a stopper for sealing the syringe and displacing the medicament, the housing having a distal end and a proximal end with an orifice intended to be applied against an injection site. The syringe is slidably arranged with respect to the housing. A spring capable of, upon activation: pushing the needle from a covered position inside the housing into an advanced position through the orifice and past the proximal end (P), operating the syringe to supply the dose of medicament (M), and retracting the syringe with the needle into the covered position. After delivering the medicament, an activator arranged to lock the spring in a pressurized state prior to manual operation and capable of, upon manual operation, releasing the spring for injection.
