LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18260800 titled 'LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITION

Simplified Explanation:

This patent application describes a lubricating oil composition that maintains low viscosity at low temperatures and increases viscosity at high temperatures. The composition includes a base oil with mineral and synthetic oils, as well as a viscosity index improver with a comb-shaped polymer.

  • The lubricating oil composition has a kinematic viscosity of 9.3 mm/s or less at 100°C and a viscosity index of 280 or more.
  • The oxygen-containing synthetic oil content in the composition must meet a specific range based on the number of carbon and oxygen atoms per molecule.
  • The viscosity index improver plays a crucial role in controlling viscosity changes at different temperatures.

Key Features and Innovation:

  • Combination of mineral and synthetic oils for temperature-specific viscosity control.
  • Inclusion of a comb-shaped polymer as a viscosity index improver.
  • Specific criteria for oxygen-containing synthetic oil content based on molecular structure.

Potential Applications:

The lubricating oil composition can be used in various automotive and industrial applications where temperature fluctuations affect lubrication performance.

Problems Solved:

  • Maintaining optimal viscosity in extreme temperature conditions.
  • Enhancing overall lubrication efficiency and longevity.

Benefits:

  • Improved engine performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Extended equipment lifespan due to better lubrication protection.

Commercial Applications:

Potential commercial applications include automotive lubricants, industrial machinery oils, and specialty lubricants for extreme temperature environments.

Questions about Lubricating Oil Composition:

1. What are the key components of the lubricating oil composition? 2. How does the viscosity index improver contribute to temperature-specific viscosity control?

Original Abstract Submitted

A lubricating oil composition that is hard to increase in viscosity in the low temperature range and is easy to increase in viscosity in the high temperature range. The lubricating oil composition contains a base oil and a viscosity index improver. The base oil contains a mineral oil and an oxygen-containing synthetic oil. The viscosity index improver contains a comb-shaped polymer. The lubricating oil composition has a kinematic viscosity of 100° C. of 9.3 mm/s or less, a viscosity index of 280 or more, and a content Y (% by mass) of the oxygen-containing synthetic oil based on the total amount of the lubricating oil composition satisfying the following expression (1): α≤Y<−3.7 ln(X)+β (1), where α=0.5, β=19, and X represents a ratio of the number of carbon atoms and the number of oxygen atoms per one molecule of the oxygen-containing synthetic oil.
