RECONFIGURABLE INTELLIGENT SURFACE (RIS) AIDED ROUND-TRIP-TIME (RTT)-BASED USER EQUIPMENT (UE) POSITIONING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240319359 titled 'RECONFIGURABLE INTELLIGENT SURFACE (RIS) AIDED ROUND-TRIP-TIME (RTT)-BASED USER EQUIPMENT (UE) POSITIONING

The patent application describes techniques for positioning using a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) associated with a base station and a network node involved in a round-trip-time (RTT) positioning session with a user equipment (UE).

  • Positioning entity receives report on operation mode of RIS and TX-RX time difference measurement for network node.
  • Determines RX-TX time difference measurement for UE based on positioning reference signals.
  • Calculates distance between UE and RIS using TX-RX and RX-TX time difference measurements.

Potential Applications: - Enhanced positioning accuracy in wireless networks. - Improved location-based services for mobile devices. - Efficient resource allocation in communication networks.

Problems Solved: - Addressing challenges in accurate positioning of devices in wireless networks. - Enhancing the performance of location-based services. - Optimizing resource utilization in communication systems.

Benefits: - Increased accuracy in determining device location. - Enhanced user experience with location-based services. - Improved network efficiency and performance.

Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Wireless Positioning Technology for Enhanced Location Services This technology can be utilized in industries such as telecommunications, IoT, and navigation services to provide precise location information for various applications.

Questions about Wireless Positioning Technology: 1. How does this technology improve the accuracy of device positioning in wireless networks? 2. What are the potential implications of this innovation on location-based services and network optimization?

Original Abstract Submitted

disclosed are techniques for positioning. in an aspect, a positioning entity receives a report indicating an operation mode of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (ris) associated with at least one base station, receives a transmission-to-reception (tx-rx) time difference measurement for a network node involved in a round-trip-time (rtt) positioning session with a user equipment (ue), determines a reception-to-transmission (rx-tx) time difference measurement for the ue, the rx-tx time difference measurement representing a difference between a reception time at the ue of a downlink positioning reference signal from the ris and a transmission time from the ue of an uplink positioning reference signal towards the ris, and calculates a distance between the ue and the ris based, at least in part, on the tx-rx time difference measurement and the rx-tx time difference measurement.
