SYSTEMS AND TECHNIQUES FOR REMOTE ASSISTANCE FOR AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240317266 titled 'SYSTEMS AND TECHNIQUES FOR REMOTE ASSISTANCE FOR AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES

The abstract of the patent application describes systems and techniques for providing remote assistance to autonomous vehicles. The method involves navigating an autonomous vehicle to a facility, identifying an error condition encountered by the vehicle, switching the operation from autonomous to human-controlled, receiving instructions from a human operator to resolve the error, and triggering the vehicle to perform the necessary maneuvers.

  • Navigating an autonomous vehicle to a facility and identifying error conditions.
  • Switching the operation of the vehicle from autonomous to human-controlled in response to the error.
  • Receiving instructions from a human operator to resolve the error condition.
  • Triggering the vehicle to perform the necessary maneuvers based on the instructions.

Potential Applications: - Remote assistance for autonomous vehicles in complex environments. - Improving safety and efficiency in autonomous vehicle operations. - Enhancing the capabilities of autonomous vehicles in challenging situations.

Problems Solved: - Addressing error conditions encountered by autonomous vehicles. - Providing a mechanism for human intervention when needed. - Ensuring the successful navigation of autonomous vehicles in various environments.

Benefits: - Increased reliability and safety of autonomous vehicle operations. - Ability to handle unexpected situations effectively. - Enhanced performance and adaptability of autonomous vehicles.

Commercial Applications: Remote assistance technology for autonomous vehicles can be utilized in industries such as transportation, logistics, and delivery services to improve operational efficiency and safety.

Questions about Remote Assistance for Autonomous Vehicles: 1. How does the remote assistance system ensure the safety of the autonomous vehicle during human-controlled operation? 2. What are the potential cost implications of implementing remote assistance technology for autonomous vehicles?

Original Abstract Submitted

systems and techniques are disclosed for providing remote assistance to autonomous vehicles. an example method can include navigating an autonomous vehicle (av) to a facility and/or a location within the facility; determining an error condition encountered by the av in the facility, the error condition including a failure to perform a maneuver in the facility and/or a restriction of the av preventing the av from performing the maneuver in the facility; in response to the error condition, initiating a switch of an operation of the av from an autonomous operation to a human-controlled operation; receiving, from a human operator, an instruction for the av to perform one or more maneuvers determined to resolve the error condition, wherein the one or more maneuvers include the maneuver or an alternative maneuver; and triggering the av to perform the one or more maneuvers based on the instruction.
