BIOS UPDATE SYSTEM - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18183323 titled 'BIOS UPDATE SYSTEM
The abstract describes a BIOS update system that includes a BIOS update subsystem connected to a memory system and a BIOS. The subsystem receives a BIOS update instruction, provides a BIOS update identifier in a non-volatile storage device accessible to the BIOS, sets a UEFI variable for the BIOS to locate BIOS update information in a storage device, initiates a first reboot, identifies the BIOS update identifier after the first reboot, retrieves the BIOS update information using the UEFI variable, updates the BIOS, and triggers a second reboot.
- BIOS update subsystem connected to memory system and BIOS
- Receives BIOS update instruction and provides BIOS update identifier in non-volatile storage
- Sets UEFI variable for BIOS to locate BIOS update information in storage device
- Initiates first reboot after receiving update instruction
- Identifies BIOS update identifier after first reboot and retrieves update information using UEFI variable
- Updates BIOS with retrieved information and triggers second reboot
Potential Applications: - Computer systems - Electronic devices requiring BIOS updates - Technology maintenance and upgrades
Problems Solved: - Streamlining BIOS update process - Ensuring BIOS updates are successfully implemented - Simplifying firmware maintenance for electronic devices
Benefits: - Improved system performance with updated BIOS - Reduced risk of errors during BIOS updates - Enhanced security through firmware updates
Commercial Applications: Title: "Efficient BIOS Update System for Enhanced Device Performance" This technology can be utilized in: - Computer manufacturing industry - IT services and support companies - Electronic device maintenance and repair businesses
Questions about BIOS Update Systems: 1. How does the BIOS update subsystem ensure the successful implementation of BIOS updates? The BIOS update subsystem verifies the BIOS update identifier in the non-volatile storage device and retrieves the update information using the UEFI variable to ensure accurate and complete BIOS updates.
2. What are the potential risks associated with BIOS updates using this system? The main risk is the possibility of errors during the update process, which could lead to system instability or malfunction. However, the system is designed to minimize these risks by verifying the update information before implementation.
Original Abstract Submitted
A BIOS update system includes a BIOS update subsystem that is coupled to a memory system and a BIOS. The BIOS update subsystem receives a BIOS update instruction and, in response, provides a BIOS update identifier in a non-volatile storage device that is accessible to the BIOS, provides a UEFI variable for the BIOS that identifies a location of BIOS update information in a storage device that is coupled to the BIOS update subsystem, and then causes a first reboot. Subsequent to the first reboot, the BIOS update subsystem identifies the BIOS update identifier in the non-volatile storage device and, in response, uses the location of the BIOS update information in the storage device identified by the UEFI variable to retrieve the BIOS update information. The BIOS update subsystem then updates the BIOS using the BIOS update information, and then causes a second reboot.
