ELECTRO-OPTICAL DEVICE AND ELECTRONIC APPARATUS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18603241 titled 'ELECTRO-OPTICAL DEVICE AND ELECTRONIC APPARATUS

The abstract describes an electro-optical device with a display area and a peripheral area outside the display area. The device includes substrates, an electro-optical layer, a light blocking layer, and a reflection layer in the peripheral area.

  • The device has a display area for showing images and a peripheral area surrounding the display area.
  • It consists of two substrates facing each other with an electro-optical layer between them that changes optical characteristics with an electric field.
  • One or both substrates have a light blocking layer and a reflection layer in the peripheral area.
  • The reflection layer has higher reflectance for visible light compared to the light blocking layer.
  • The light blocking layer is closer to the display area than the reflection layer.

Potential Applications: - This technology can be used in electronic displays such as LCDs and OLEDs. - It can enhance image quality and contrast in display devices. - The light blocking and reflection layers can improve the overall performance of the electro-optical device.

Problems Solved: - Enhances image quality by controlling light reflection in the peripheral area. - Improves contrast and visibility of displayed images. - Provides a more efficient and effective electro-optical device design.

Benefits: - Better image quality and contrast in display devices. - Enhanced performance and efficiency of electro-optical devices. - Improved user experience with clearer and more vibrant images.

Commercial Applications: Title: Advanced Electro-Optical Device for Enhanced Display Performance This technology can be utilized in consumer electronics, automotive displays, medical imaging devices, and industrial equipment with display screens. It can lead to better visual experiences for users and increased demand for devices incorporating this innovation.

Questions about Electro-Optical Devices: 1. How does the light blocking layer in the peripheral area contribute to the overall performance of the device? The light blocking layer helps to control light reflection and improve image quality by reducing unwanted glare and enhancing contrast. 2. What are the potential market implications of integrating this technology into various electronic devices? By improving display performance and user experience, the technology can lead to increased consumer demand for products equipped with these advanced features.

Original Abstract Submitted

An electro-optical device includes a display area configured to display an image and a peripheral area provided outside the display area in plan view. The electro-optical device includes a first substrate, a second substrate facing the first substrate, and an electro-optical layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate and having an optical characteristic changing in accordance with an electric field. One or both of the first substrate and the second substrate include a light blocking layer provided in the peripheral area and a reflection layer provided in the peripheral area. A reflectance of the reflection layer with respect to visible light is higher than a reflectance of the light blocking layer with respect to visible light. The light blocking layer is disposed closer to the display area than the reflection layer is to the display area.
