ANNULAR PRESSURE ACTIVATED DOWNHOLE TOOL - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18624635 titled 'ANNULAR PRESSURE ACTIVATED DOWNHOLE TOOL
The abstract describes an annular pressure-activated downhole tool with a housing, a mandrel, a power spring, and a trigger mechanism. When exposed to a selected annular pressure, the trigger disengages from the inner surface of the housing, releasing the power spring and shifting the mandrel along the passage.
- The downhole tool has a housing with an inner surface, an annular projection, and an opening.
- A mandrel extends into the passage of the housing and is supported by a power spring support.
- A power spring is arranged around the mandrel, extending between the power spring support and the annular projection.
- A trigger mechanism is housed within either the mandrel or the power spring support and selectively engages with the inner surface of the housing.
- The trigger mechanism is operable to disengage from the inner surface, releasing the power spring and causing the mandrel to shift along the passage when a specific annular pressure is applied.
Potential Applications: - Oil and gas drilling operations - Wellbore completion and intervention - Geothermal drilling
Problems Solved: - Efficient downhole tool operation - Controlled shifting of mandrel in response to pressure changes - Enhanced safety in downhole operations
Benefits: - Increased productivity in drilling operations - Improved reliability and precision in downhole tool performance - Enhanced safety measures for workers
Commercial Applications: Title: "Innovative Annular Pressure-Activated Downhole Tool for Enhanced Drilling Operations" This technology can be used in the oil and gas industry for drilling and completion operations, as well as in geothermal drilling projects. The tool's ability to respond to specific annular pressures provides a reliable and efficient solution for downhole operations.
Questions about Annular Pressure-Activated Downhole Tool: 1. How does the trigger mechanism disengage from the inner surface of the housing? The trigger mechanism disengages from the inner surface of the housing when exposed to a selected annular pressure, releasing the power spring and causing the mandrel to shift along the passage. 2. What are the potential benefits of using this annular pressure-activated downhole tool in oil and gas drilling operations? The potential benefits include increased productivity, improved reliability, and enhanced safety measures for workers in drilling operations.
Original Abstract Submitted
An annular pressure activated downhole tool has a housing including an outer surface, an inner surface defining a passage, an annular projection projecting into the passage from the inner surface, and an opening. A mandrel extends into the passage. The mandrel has a first end and a second end. A power spring support is detachably connected to the second end of the mandrel in the passage. A power spring is arranged about the mandrel and extends between the power spring support and the annular projection. A trigger housing is arranged in one of the mandrel and the power spring support. A trigger arranged in the trigger housing selectively engages with the inner surface. The trigger is operable to disengage from the inner surface of the housing, releasing the power spring, and shifting the mandrel along the passage when exposed to a selected annular pressure.
