the disclosure relates to an optical system for eye tracking, including: a light source; arranged to emit light; a light detector for detecting light and indicating positional information of the detected light thereby; a holographic optical element (hoe) arrangement, configured to direct light from the light source towards an eye, to receive at least one glint of the light from the eye and to direct light from the received at least one glint to be in focus at the light detector, the hoe arrangement being configured with a large enough numerical aperture so that ambient or stray light directed by the hoe arrangement is out of focus at the light detector. the optical system may form part of an augmented reality (ar) or virtual reality (vr) system.
