the present disclosure relates to off-platform messaging. a selection of a third-party communication mechanism is received from a first device of a first user. a message is generated for communication to a second device of a second user via the third-party communication mechanism. the message identifies a network resource containing information relating to an event. a request to access the network resource is received. an event invitation interface is caused to be presented at the second device. the event invitation interface comprises a user-selectable indicium to cause issuing of a request to download an application associated with a messaging system. the request to download the application comprises a user identifier associated with the second user and an event identifier associated with the event. the user identifier and the event identifier are used to join the second user to a group chat hosted by the messaging system and pertaining to the event.
