a formulation delivery appliance can be used for treatment of the hair and scalp, such as an appliance used to color hair. the appliance may include a container having an aperture and being configured to retain a volume of formulation. the formulation delivery appliance may further include an elongate engagement element having a channel extending therethrough and being configured to be at least partially received by the aperture of the container when the container is mounted to the engagement element. a vent aperture is formed in the engagement element and provides fluid communication between the channel and an area outside of the engagement element when the container is disengaged from the engagement element. the vent aperture is sealed, and the channel receives a flow of formulation from the container when the container is mounted to the engagement element.
