METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18356099 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for transmitting power wirelessly from a transmitter to a receiver.

  • The method starts by transmitting a detection signal from the transmitter to the receiver using a transmission coil. This signal is used to determine if the receiver is present.
  • The receiver responds to the detection signal by transmitting a signal strength indicator back to the transmitter. This helps identify the transmission coil that received the indicator.
  • The identified transmission coil is then selected as the power transmission coil.
  • The receiver also sends a Foreign Object Detection (FOD) status packet to the transmitter.
  • Based on the FOD status packet, the transmitter determines if there is a foreign object present in the charging area.
  • If a foreign object is detected, the power transmission is controlled in a first power transfer mode.
  • If no foreign object is detected, the power transmission is controlled in a second power transfer mode.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method of transmitting power of a wireless power transmitter, including a phase of transmitting a detection signal to a wireless power receiver through a transmission coil to detect that the wireless power receiver is present; a phase of identifying a transmission coil that has received a signal strength indicator transmitted from the wireless power receiver in response to the detection signal; a phase of selecting the transmission coil that has received the signal strength indicator as a power transmission coil; a phase of receiving an FOD status packet from a wireless power receiver; a first determination phase of determining whether a foreign object is present in a charging area of the wireless power transmitter based on the FOD status packet; and a power control phase of controlling power transmission in a first power transfer mode when it is determined in the first determination phase that the foreign object is present in the charging area, or controlling the power transmission in a second power transfer mode when it is determined in the first determination phase that the foreign object is not present in the charging area.
