METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18356087 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for receiving power wirelessly from a power transmitter. Here are the key points:

  • The method involves transmitting a signal to the power transmitter indicating the status of a foreign object detection (FOD) system.
  • If the power transmitter responds with a NAK (negative acknowledgment) indicating the presence of a foreign object in the charging area, the receiver will receive a first power.
  • If the power transmitter responds with an ACK (acknowledgment) indicating no foreign object is present, the receiver will receive a second power.
  • The receiver then transmits a packet to the power transmitter indicating the intensity of the received power.
  • The power transmitter uses this information to determine whether a foreign object is present in the charging area and sends a signal back to the receiver with the result of this determination.
  • The receiver continues to receive the second power while this process takes place.

Overall, this method allows for wireless power transfer while ensuring the safety of the charging area by detecting the presence of foreign objects.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method of receiving power of a wireless power receiver, including a signal transmission phase of transmitting a signal including an FOD status packet to a wireless power transmitter; a power reception phase of receiving a first power from the wireless power transmitter when a NAK response indicating that a foreign object is present in the charging area of the wireless power transmitter is received from the wireless power transmitter, or receiving a second power from the wireless power transmitter when an ACK response indicating that the foreign object is not present in the charging area of the wireless power transmitter is received from the wireless power transmitter, in response to the FOD status packet; a phase of transmitting a reception power packet including information on reception power intensity to the wireless power transmitter; and a phase of receiving a signal including information on a result of determining whether the foreign object is present in the charging area from the wireless power transmitter using information measured or calculated by the wireless power transmitter in response to the reception power packet, while receiving the second power.
