RECONFIGURABLE INTELLIGENT SURFACE AIDED POSITIONING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18248656 titled 'RECONFIGURABLE INTELLIGENT SURFACE AIDED POSITIONING

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes techniques for wireless communication, specifically for positioning using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS).

  • The base station (BS) sends a first positioning reference signal (PRS) to a user equipment (UE).
  • The BS also sends a second PRS to an RIS, which is configured to reflect the signal towards the UE.
  • The UE measures the time difference of arrival (RSTD) for the first PRS and the second PRS and sends this information back to the BS.

These techniques aim to improve positioning accuracy and reliability in wireless communication systems.

Original Abstract Submitted

Disclosed are techniques for wireless communication, and specifically for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided positioning. In some aspects, a base station (BS) may transmit, to a user equipment (UE), a first positioning reference signal (PRS). The BS may transmit, to RIS configured to reflect a received signal towards the UE, a second PRS. The BS may receive, from the UE, a downlink reference signal time difference (RSTD) measurement for the first PRS and the second PRS.
