SEPARATOR FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL DEVICE, AN ELECTRODE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE SAME, A SECONDARY BATTERY INCLUDING THE SAME, AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SEPARATOR - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18224211 titled 'SEPARATOR FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL DEVICE, AN ELECTRODE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE SAME, A SECONDARY BATTERY INCLUDING THE SAME, AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SEPARATOR

Simplified Explanation

- The patent application describes a separator for an electrochemical device, such as a secondary battery. - The separator includes a porous polymer substrate and a porous coating layer on at least one surface of the substrate. - The coating layer consists of a binder polymer and inorganic particles. - The separator has a central portion and two end portions, with the thickness of the end portions being larger than the central portion in the transverse direction. - This design prevents a deficiency in adhesion at the end portions when the separator is adhered to the electrodes. - The thickness of the end portions is controlled to ensure uniform adhesion throughout the separator.

Original Abstract Submitted

A separator for an electrochemical device, an electrode assembly and secondary battery including the same, and a method of manufacturing the separator. The separator for an electrochemical device includes a porous polymer substrate; and a porous coating layer on at least one surface of the porous polymer substrate. The porous coating layer includes a binder polymer and inorganic particles. The separator has a central portion and two end portions. The thickness of the separator at the two end portions in the transverse direction (TD) is larger than the thickness of the separator at the central portion in the TD. The separator prevents generation of a deficiency in adhesion at the two end portions in the TD upon the adhesion of the separator with the electrodes and has uniform adhesion by controlling the thickness of the two end portions of the separator in the TD.
