ZONE HINTS FOR ZONED NAMESPACE STORAGE DEVICES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

  • This abstract for appeared for US patent application number 18044976 Titled 'ZONE HINTS FOR ZONED NAMESPACE STORAGE DEVICES'

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes the concept of zone hints for use with a zoned namespace (ZNS) storage device. These hints provide instructions to the storage device regarding the allocation of storage resources, the writing process, and the priority of operations related to specific zones.

The first hint indicates that a zone is part of a group of zones, and instructs the storage device to allocate storage resources that are physically adjacent to resources reserved for other zones in the group.

The second hint instructs the storage device to bypass a staging area when writing to the zone, allowing for faster filling of the zone.

The third hint is associated with a background operation and instructs the storage device to deprioritize at least one operation writing to the zone or bypass the staging area when writing to the zone.

Overall, these hints provide more efficient and optimized storage management for zoned namespace storage devices.

Original Abstract Submitted

Zone hints for use with a zoned namespace (ZNS) storage device. Zone hints include one or more of a first hint indicating that a zone is part of a group of a plurality of zones, a second hint indicating that the zone is to be fast-filled, or a third hint indicating that the zone is associated with a background operation. The first hint is structured to instruct the ZNS storage device to allocate to the zone a first storage resources that are physically adjacent to second storage resources reserved for others of the plurality of zones. The second hint is structured to instruct the ZNS storage device to bypass a staging area when writing to the zone. The third hint is structured to instruct the ZNS storage device to deprioritizing at least one operation writing to the zone, or to bypass the staging area when writing to the zone.
