COMMUNICATION DEVICES AND METHODS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18033140 titled 'COMMUNICATION DEVICES AND METHODS

Simplified Explanation

The present disclosure is about preempting PPDUs, which means cutting short a data unit carrying non-latency sensitive traffic to prioritize STAs with latency constraints.

  • The first communication device has circuitry that can listen to ongoing data exchange between a second and third communication device on a wireless channel.
  • It can estimate the reception duration of a data unit, which is the time it would take for the third communication device to receive the data unit if it were not truncated.
  • The device can determine if the transmission of the data unit should be truncated or if a truncation condition is met.
  • If the transmission is truncated or a truncation condition is met, the device can receive a preemptive data unit from the second communication device or transmit a preemptive data unit to the second communication device.

Original Abstract Submitted

The present disclosure relates to the concept of preempting PPDUs, i.e., truncating a PPDU carrying non-latency sensitive traffic to serve STAs with latency constraints. A first communication device comprises circuitry configured to listen to an ongoing data exchange between a second communication device and a third communication device on a wireless channel, to estimate a reception duration of a data unit, to determine if the transmission of the data unit is truncated and/or if a truncation condition is met, the reception duration indicating the time of reception of the data unit by the third communication device if the data unit were not truncated, and, if the transmission of the data unit is truncated and/or if a truncation condition is met, receive a preemptive data unit from the second communication device or transmit a preemptive data unit to the second communication device.
