LITHIUM SECONDARY BATTERY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18023514 titled 'LITHIUM SECONDARY BATTERY

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a lithium secondary battery with a positive electrode, negative electrode, and a porous separator. It also includes a spacer between the separator and one of the electrodes, and a non-aqueous electrolyte with lithium ion conductivity.

  • The lithium metal in the negative electrode deposits during charging and dissolves during discharging.
  • The battery has a first region facing the spacer and a second region not facing the spacer where the negative and positive electrodes face each other.
  • The spacer can be nonporous or porous, with a height of at least 20 µm.
  • If the spacer is porous, it has a porosity equal to or less than the porosity of the separator.

Original Abstract Submitted

A lithium secondary battery includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a porous separator disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, a spacer disposed between the separator and at least one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and a non-aqueous electrolyte having lithium ion conductivity. In the negative electrode, the lithium metal deposits during charging, and the lithium metal dissolves during discharging. In a region where the negative electrode and the positive electrode face each other, a first region (R1) facing the spacer and a second region (R2) not facing the spacer are included. The spacer is nonporous or porous, and the spacer has a height (t) of 20 µm or more. When the spacer is porous, the spacer has a porosity Psp, the porosity Psp of the spacer being equal to or less than a porosity Pse the separator.
