POLICY CONTROL FOR REDUNDANT TRANSMISSIONS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

  • This abstract for appeared for US patent application number 18020517 Titled 'POLICY CONTROL FOR REDUNDANT TRANSMISSIONS'

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a system and method for managing network sessions for User Equipment (UE). The Session Management Function (SMF) receives a session request message from the UE, which includes a specific Data Network Name (DNN) and Single Network Slice Selection Assistance Information (S-NSSAI) pair. Upon receiving the session request, the SMF sends a policy create message to the Policy Control Function (PCF). This message includes the DNN and S-NSSAI pair, information indicating that the user plane for the session is redundancy capable, and subscription information for the UE, indicating that the subscriber is allowed to have redundant transmissions.

The PCF, upon receiving the policy control request with a UE identifier, retrieves policy information associated with the UE from a data repository. This policy information includes a list of allowed services. The PCF then determines whether any of the allowed services require redundant transmissions.

Original Abstract Submitted

Disclosed herein is a SMF () that receives a session request message transmitted by a User Equipment, UE (), the session request message comprising a DNN and S-NSSAI pair; and after receiving the session request message, the SMF transmits towards a PCF (), a policy create message that includes one or more of: i) the DNN and S-NSSAI pair from the session request message, ii) information indicating that a user plane for a PDU session for the DNN and S-NSSAI pair is redundancy capable, and iii) subscription information for the UE that indicates that the subscriber is allowed to have redundant transmissions. Also disclosed is a method in a PCF () that receives a policy control request comprising a UE identifier that identifies a UE (); and after receiving the policy control request, obtains from a data repository () policy information associated with the UE (), wherein the policy information includes a list of allowed services; and determines whether any of the allowed services require redundant transmissions;
