METHOD FOR PROVIDING DYNAMIC VOLTAGE REGULATOR CHARACTERISTIC CHANGES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17824103 titled 'METHOD FOR PROVIDING DYNAMIC VOLTAGE REGULATOR CHARACTERISTIC CHANGES

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an information handling system that includes a DDR5 DIMM (dual in-line memory module) and a voltage regulator.

  • The voltage regulator supplies power to the DDR5 DIMM by providing a voltage rail.
  • The voltage rail can operate in two different modes: pulse frequency modulation (PFM) and forced continuous conduction mode (FCCM).
  • The mode selection is determined by an input signal received by the voltage regulator.
  • When the information handling system is in a normal state, it provides an input signal to the voltage regulator to operate in the PFM mode.
  • When the information handling system is in a sleep mode, it provides the same input signal to the voltage regulator to operate in the FCCM mode.

Innovation:

  • The patent application introduces a method for controlling the voltage rail of a DDR5 DIMM in an information handling system.
  • The system can dynamically switch between PFM and FCCM modes based on the state of the information handling system.
  • This allows for efficient power management, optimizing power consumption in different operating states.

Original Abstract Submitted

An information handling system includes a DDR5 DIMM and a voltage regulator. The voltage regulator provides a voltage rail to the DDR5 DIMM. In a first mode, the voltage rail is based upon a pulse frequency modulation, and in a second mode, the voltage rail is based upon a forced continuous conduction mode). Selection of one of modes is based upon an input to the voltage regulator. When the information handling system is in a first state, the information handling system provides an input signal to the input to direct the voltage regulator to operate in the first state, and when the information handling system is in a second state associated with a sleep mode of the information handling system, the information handling system provides the first input signal to the first input of the voltage regulator to direct the voltage regulator to operate in the second state.
