ADJUSTMENT OF REVERBERATION LEVEL - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240137727 titled 'ADJUSTMENT OF REVERBERATION LEVEL

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for rendering an audio source by adjusting the audio signal based on a reverberation parameter and the directivity pattern of the source.

  • The method involves receiving an input audio signal and a reverberation parameter.
  • The directivity pattern of the audio source is obtained and used to derive a relative gain.
  • The relative gain is then applied to the input audio signal to generate an adjusted audio signal.

Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in:

  • Audio production for enhancing the spatial characteristics of recorded sound.
  • Virtual reality and gaming for creating immersive audio environments.

Problems Solved

This technology addresses the following issues:

  • Inaccurate representation of audio sources in reverberant environments.
  • Lack of control over directivity patterns in audio rendering.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include:

  • Improved realism and spatialization in audio rendering.
  • Enhanced user experience in immersive audio applications.

Potential Commercial Applications

The potential commercial applications of this technology include:

  • Audio software and plugins for professionals in the music and film industry.
  • Virtual reality and gaming companies looking to enhance their audio experiences.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art for this technology could be the use of directivity patterns in microphone arrays for beamforming applications.

Unanswered Questions

How does this method compare to existing audio rendering techniques?

This method offers a more precise control over the directivity patterns of audio sources, potentially leading to more realistic and immersive audio experiences compared to traditional methods.

What impact could this technology have on the field of virtual reality audio?

This technology could significantly enhance the spatial audio capabilities of virtual reality systems, providing users with a more immersive and realistic audio experience.

Original Abstract Submitted

a method of rendering an audio source is provided. the method comprises receiving an input audio signal corresponding to the audio source and receiving a reverberation parameter indicating a target energy ratio with respect to a reverberant sound component of audio for the audio source. the method further comprises obtaining a directivity pattern of the audio source, deriving a relative gain for the audio source based on the obtained directivity pattern, wherein the relative gain is relative to an omnidirectional audio source, and generating an adjusted audio signal using the received input audio signal, the reverberation parameter, and the derived relative gain.
