FAULT IDENTIFICATION OF MULTIPLE PHASE VOLTAGE REGULATOR - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240134433 titled 'FAULT IDENTIFICATION OF MULTIPLE PHASE VOLTAGE REGULATOR

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a voltage regulator system for an information handling system that includes a voltage regulator with multiple power stages and a voltage regulator controller. The controller monitors for fault signals on different pins of the circuit associated with the power stages to detect and respond to faults.

  • The voltage regulator system includes a voltage regulator with multiple power stages (PStages) and a voltage regulator controller.
  • The voltage regulator controller monitors for fault signals on different pins of the circuit associated with the power stages.
  • If a fault signal is detected on a pin, the controller determines the occurrence of a fault in the corresponding power stage.

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in various electronic devices that require stable voltage regulation, such as computers, servers, and networking equipment.

Problems Solved

1. Ensures reliable operation of the information handling system by detecting and responding to faults in the voltage regulator. 2. Helps prevent damage to sensitive components by monitoring and controlling the voltage levels effectively.

Benefits

1. Improved system reliability and performance. 2. Enhanced protection for electronic components. 3. Efficient fault detection and response mechanism.

Potential Commercial Applications

"Voltage Regulator System for Information Handling Systems" can be utilized in industries manufacturing electronic devices, data centers, and telecommunications equipment.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be traditional voltage regulator systems that may not have the advanced fault detection and response capabilities as described in this patent application.

Unanswered Questions

How does the voltage regulator controller communicate with the voltage regulator in the system?

The communication protocol and mechanism between the controller and the regulator are not detailed in the abstract. Further information on this aspect would provide a clearer understanding of the system's operation.

What specific threshold voltages are used to determine fault conditions in the power stages?

The abstract mentions the comparison of voltages to threshold levels to detect faults, but the exact values of these threshold voltages are not specified. Knowing these values would help in understanding the sensitivity of the fault detection mechanism.

Original Abstract Submitted

a voltage regulator system of an information handling system includes a voltage regulator and a voltage regulator controller. the voltage regulator includes multiple power-stages (pstages). the voltage regulator controller communicates with the voltage regulator. the voltage regulator controller monitors for a first fault signal on a first pin of a circuit associated with a first pstage of the pstages. in response to a first voltage of the first fault signal at the first pin being greater than a threshold voltage, the voltage regulator controller monitors a second pin of the circuit for a second fault signal and determines whether a voltage of the second fault signal at the second pin is equal to a second voltage. based on the voltage of the second fault signal being equal to the second voltage, the voltage regulator controller determines a first fault has occurred in the first pstage.
