INTELLIGENT APPLICATION WRITER TYPE-BASED EXTENSION FOR COPY SERVICE TIMEOUT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240126583 titled 'INTELLIGENT APPLICATION WRITER TYPE-BASED EXTENSION FOR COPY SERVICE TIMEOUT

Simplified Explanation

The abstract of the patent application describes a method for backing up an application running in a virtual machine by freezing the application and the file system of the VM, generating a snapshot, and performing a cleanup operation on the snapshot.

  • Request issued to copy service for backing up application in VM
  • First time window freezes application
  • Second time window freezes file system of VM
  • Request issued to snapshot data mover for snapshot of application
  • Notification to copy service of successful snapshot generation
  • Call from copy service for cleanup operation on snapshot delayed for additional time

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in various industries where data backup and recovery is crucial, such as IT, healthcare, finance, and e-commerce.

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of efficiently backing up applications running in virtual machines without disrupting their operation.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include improved data protection, reduced downtime during backup processes, and streamlined backup operations for virtualized environments.

Potential Commercial Applications

Potential commercial applications of this technology include backup and recovery solutions for cloud service providers, data centers, and managed service providers.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art for this technology could be traditional backup methods for virtual machines that may not provide the same level of efficiency and automation as the described method.

What are the specific technical requirements for implementing this technology?

To implement this technology, the system must be able to freeze the application and file system of the virtual machine within specific time windows, generate a snapshot of the application, and perform cleanup operations on the snapshot. Additionally, the system must be able to communicate effectively between the copy service, snapshot data mover, and the virtual machine.

How does this technology compare to existing backup solutions for virtual machines?

This technology offers a more streamlined and efficient approach to backing up applications running in virtual machines by automating the process of freezing the application and file system, generating snapshots, and performing cleanup operations. Existing solutions may require manual intervention and may not offer the same level of automation and efficiency.

Original Abstract Submitted

a first request is issued to a copy service of a virtual machine (vm) to indicate that an application running in the vm is to be backed up. the request triggers a first time window within which the application is frozen and a second time window, inside the first time window, within which a file system of the vm is frozen. a second request is issued to a snapshot data mover for a snapshot of the application. prior to expiration of the second time window and without having received an indication that snapshot generation was successful, the copy service is notified that generation of the snapshot has been successful. a call, responsive to the notification, is received from the copy service indicating that a cleanup operation on the snapshot can proceed. returning the call from the copy service is delayed thereby providing additional time for generating the snapshot.
