RLC AM SELECTIVE RETRANSMISSION AND WINDOW MOVEMENT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240106571 titled 'RLC AM SELECTIVE RETRANSMISSION AND WINDOW MOVEMENT

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes methods, systems, and computer-readable medium for selective re-transmission of radio link channel (RLC) service data units (SDUs).

  • Determining unsuccessful transmission of an RLC SDU with a first sequence number
  • Deciding whether to re-transmit the RLC SDU
  • Moving the start location of an RLC transmission window to an unacknowledged SDU with a higher sequence number
  • Transmitting a signal to skip the RLC SDU with the first sequence number

Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in wireless communication systems, particularly in improving the reliability and efficiency of data transmission over radio links.

Problems Solved

This technology helps in addressing issues related to unsuccessful data transmission, ensuring that data packets are successfully delivered even in challenging network conditions.

Benefits

The selective re-transmission method optimizes the use of network resources by focusing on re-transmitting only necessary data packets, reducing unnecessary re-transmissions and improving overall network performance.

Potential Commercial Applications

Potential commercial applications of this technology include telecommunications companies, network equipment manufacturers, and providers of wireless communication services.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) protocols in wireless communication systems to handle re-transmissions of data packets in case of errors or unsuccessful transmissions.

What are the specific criteria for determining whether to re-transmit an RLC SDU?

The specific criteria for determining whether to re-transmit an RLC SDU include the unsuccessful transmission of the SDU with a first sequence number and the decision based on network conditions and the importance of the data packet.

How does moving the start location of an RLC transmission window improve data transmission efficiency?

Moving the start location of an RLC transmission window to an unacknowledged SDU with a higher sequence number allows for the skipping of unnecessary re-transmissions, focusing on transmitting new data packets and improving the overall efficiency of data transmission.

Original Abstract Submitted

disclosed are methods, systems, and computer-readable medium to perform operations for selective re-transmission of radio link channel (rlc) service data units (sdus). in one aspect, the method can include actions of determining that transmission of an rlc sdu having a first sequence number was not successful, determining whether to re-transmit the rlc sdu, and based on a determination that the particular rlc sdu is not to be re-transmitted: moving a start location of an rlc transmission window to an rlc sdu that (i) has a sequence number that is greater than the first sequence number and (ii) has not been acknowledged, and transmitting a transmission to another device that indicates that the rlc sdu having the first sequence number is to be skipped.
